Themes of resistance and resilience cut through the multidisciplinary work of Minoo Emami (@minooemamistudio), whose retrospective exhibit takes place this fall at the University of Hartford Galleries. (See exhibit info below.)
As an instructor for RISD Continuing Education’s adult courses, Emami often finds inspiration in her own creative practice. “My area of research, the Middle East and Islamic aesthetic, helps me to create unique and diverse content, drawing techniques and visual language practices for my course,” she says. “Keeping students engaged and excited for the entire asynchronous course period is important.”
Emami hopes that her students will take what they have learned to “create original drawings using new techniques in image-making and storytelling.” Her advice for anyone thinking of getting involved with these programs would be to “review the course list and evaluate the offered courses from both student and teacher perspectives. Teach if you have more to offer. Be brave to take the challenging course.”

Minoo Emami: Under My Veil
September 21–December 16, 2023
Joseloff Gallery, University of Hartford Galleries
This retrospective exhibition highlights the artist’s early career as a self-taught painter, alongside experiments in sculpture, photography, printmaking, video, and installation art that come together to transform the trauma of war and oppression into objects of beauty and hope. Significantly, the exhibition will include new, never-before-seen work created over the past year in response to the ongoing Women’s Rights Movement in Iran.
