Rhode Island School of Design

Continuing Education

From figure drawing to sculpture and computer animation, some teens attend RISD/CE courses for sheer fun, while others have a more academic goal in mind. CE courses for young adults are offered as part of the Young Artist Program, and may be taken on an individual basis, or as part of a focused curriculum in one of our young adult certificate programs. In the summer, several week-long day camps are available in specific disciplines, or for the most immersive instruction, RISD also offers the six-week Pre-College Program, for 16- to 18-year-old high school students.

The Pre-College and Young Artist Programs (see videos on left and right, respectively) provide teens
with the opportunity to broaden their artistic horizons while building skills and confidence both in and out of the studio.

RISD/CE's Young Artist Program provides a strong grounding in the visual arts and encourages creative and personal growth through self-expression. Year-round courses provide opportunities for teens to be with their peers who are energetic, creative and passionate about what they're doing.

very important
To ensure the age appropriateness of the curriculum, young artists must meet the age requirement listed with each course description by the beginning of class. No exceptions!

fine arts proficiency standards
All RISD/CE courses offered for teens are designed to assist students in meeting the Rhode Island Board of Regents fine arts proficiency standards.

Young adult certificate programs offer teens (ages 13-17) the chance to focus their studies as they develop their artistic abilities. Whether used purely as a means for creative self-expression or to prepare for further artistic endeavors after high school, these programs broaden horizons and increase skill levels while building confidence and maturity. The following certificate programs are available for teens:

Animation (YA)  •  Art School Preparation (AP)  •  Comic Art (YC)  •
Design (YD)  •  Fashion Design (YF)
Game Design (YG)  •  Movie-Making (YM)  •  Photography (PH)

The six-week summer residential Pre-College Program offers 16- to 18-year-old high school students a comprehensive introduction to the college art school experience. Students follow a college-like studio curriculum and live in RISD residence halls, in a full-immersion encounter with art and design education at the highest level.

Teens ages 13 to 17 are invited to join us for full-day camps offered during school vacations in winter and spring, as well as full-day camps in the summer. Camps for teens are held on the RISD campus in Providence.
