Artistic exploration is one of the best ways for teens to build confidence in expressing themselves, learn to solve problems and think critically. Teens can maximize their summer by gaining a foundation in art and design fundamentals, experimenting with a new medium and building technical skills.

Location

Summer teen in-person courses are held on RISD’s Main Campus in Providence, Rhode Island, with many taking advantage of resources including the RISD Museum and Nature Lab. Note: There is no residential/overnight option for these courses.

Instructors

Our instructors are not only amazing teachers, but have successful artistic practices themselves. Each course is led by one instructor plus a teaching assistant.

Evaluation and feedback

Students receive feedback throughout each day of class. On the last day, instructors will meet briefly with each student to review their progress and performance during the week.

Important teen course information

What to bring each day

Please bring a snack* and a water bottle each day, and bring lunch if taking both a morning and an afternoon course. Students will sometimes visit campus spaces outside of their designated classroom, so they should wear comfortable and appropriate clothing for their class. All art supplies will be provided.

*Note: Due to severe allergic reactions, we discourage students from bringing peanut or tree nut-based foods.

Attendance

RISD’s attendance policy requires students to attend all classes regularly and promptly. Absences and tardiness are recorded daily on each student’s record and are considered by instructors when reviewing end-of-course feedback. Students missing a class should contact the instructor prior to the class being missed, for information on how best to keep up to date with assignments.

Emergency contact information

All Youth Program students are required to have emergency contact information included on their student profile. Students will not be able to participate in their class unless this is complete.

RISD Campus
RISD Public Safety will respond and contact further emergency services as needed in case of an emergency. Note: We do not administer any form of medicine during Youth Program classes or camps, including prescriptions.

Protection of minors

RISD is dedicated to the welfare and safety of all persons who participate in college-sponsored events. Most of the minors on our campus take part in programs through the RISD Museum, Continuing Education, and Project Open Door; however, there are also opportunities for third parties to run programs with minor participants on our campus. Because minors are a particularly vulnerable population, the college takes extra precautions to protect those who participate in activities, programs, and camps on our campus and under the authority and direction of the college at other locations. This reporting obligation includes information about suspected abuse, neglect, or inadequate care provided by a parent, guardian, or custodian/caretaker. RISD Public Safety

RISD Public Safety is staffed 24 hours a day and is the office to call for all emergencies. From RISD phones, dial ext. 6666 or, from the outdoor blue emergency phones, pick up the receiver to be connected to Public Safety. In an emergency on campus, a call to 401 454-6666 initiates a faster response than a call to 911. In an emergency off campus only, dial 911. Public Safety’s non-emergency extension is 6376 (from standard phones, 401 454-6376).
