Rhode Island School of Design Summer Teen Art Institute at HD Shanghai Bilingual School
RISD Continuing Education is thrilled to announce we will be offering a three-week immersive teen art program for Chinese students in Shanghai for summer 2022. The RISD Summer Teen Art Institute at HD Shanghai Bilingual School is an exciting opportunity for students in China to immerse themselves into a critical art and design experience. This teen art program is a chance for students across the globe to experience RISD’s renowned approach to art and design education.
The RISD Continuing Education and Elite K12 three-week art intensive program provides an opportunity for rising 10-12 grade students to immerse themselves into a critical art and design experience. Students who are passionate about visual arts will engage in studio projects informed by RISD’s renowned approach to art and design education. The hybrid mix of online and in person learning ensures that students of all skill levels will engage in a vibrant creative experience that will help them define strategies for portfolio development and next steps in their visual arts education.
In studio, coursework is project-based and experiential, and provides students the opportunity to be challenged in new ways of thinking, explore meaning in their work and give voice to their personal visual expression—key assets sought by art college portfolio reviewers. Emphasis in studio work is on exploration and inquiry through demonstrations and assignments, research and material investigations. Students will participate in critiques and receive verbal and written feedback on their work. Critique is crucial to creative process and advancement; it provides students with a visual language that can reinforce, challenge and change ideas. Throughout the program students will develop a series of visual studies—investigation through sketching and prototyping—that will inform their portfolio development.
Students meet with RISD faculty for 3 hours each day (Monday–Thursday) over live, virtual Zoom sessions. Fridays will be open working time for students in the studio, where they will have the opportunity to work in small groups or get help with assignments if needed. Each course will culminate in a final critique of the work where students will present to the class and receive feedback from faculty and classmates. Additional coursework and engagement will occur through Canvas, our learning management system. The program will conclude with a final exhibition and a certificate of completion.
The program will run from July 18–August 6 2022 at the HD Shanghai Bilingual School.
