Taylor Pate’s background as both an artist and an educator inspired her to be part of a program that encourages students to explore new ideas, take risks, and develop their own artistic voices. RISD CE stood out as a place where she could share her experiences while continuing to grow alongside her students.
Her upcoming course for teens (ages 13-17), Expressive Portraiture, allows students to explore identity, emotion, and storytelling through unconventional approaches. “The assignments will challenge students to move beyond traditional portraiture by incorporating abstraction, symbolism, and experimental techniques. With an emphasis on personal expression over technical perfection, the course creates a space for students to push the boundaries of how portraiture can communicate meaning.”
In her own work, the artist explores themes of mythology, identity, and the act of being seen—concepts that naturally weave into her approach to teaching.
“The most important thing I hope students take away from my classes is the confidence to trust their own creative instincts. I want them to understand that great art isn’t about technical perfection or expensive materials—it’s about expression, experimentation, and personal vision.” Pate adds, “My goal is for students to leave with a stronger sense of their artistic voice, a willingness to take risks, and an appreciation for the process of making, not just the final outcome. More than anything, I hope they walk away feeling inspired to keep creating, exploring, and pushing the boundaries of their work.”
The teen course Expressive Portraiture begins April 19, 2025 and will be offered again in Summer 2025.
