Online Classes, Technology Requirements + Access

To register for a RISD CE Online course, please visit our registration website to browse and register.

Some RISD CE Online courses are synchronous, meaning they meet live during a specific time of day, in Eastern Time, on the video conferencing platform Zoom

Asynchronous discussions, course materials and assignments can be taken at any time of day, as they do not meet live. These online classes are delivered by our course management system CE Link.

Asynchronous classes do not have a set meeting time, but instead will have various touch points for interaction between students and instructor, and for student-to-student interactions. These touch points will take place through tutorials, responding to prompts, participating in discussions and sharing work.

Sharing work will include both in-process postings that require encouragement and advice, as well as sharing finished assignments and/or presentations and offering feedback. Conversations, engagement and instruction will be happening online, but not necessarily in real-time.

Please note that some instructors will offer virtual office hours where video or telephone conversations will occur, and others will include projects where small groups of students will meet through the video conferencing platform Zoom.

RISD CE hybrid courses are part of a low-residency, blended learning program at the Westerly Education Center. They will be a mix of in-person meetings and online delivery through CE Link. 12-session classes will meet in-person six times, on alternate weeks, and the other sessions will be conducted online. 6-session classes will meet in-person three times, on the first, third and last weeks of the course, and the other sessions will be conducted online. Some classes, at the discretion of the instructor and students’ availability, may meet more often in person as needed.

Asynchronous discussions, course materials and assignments can be taken at any time of day, as they do not meet live. These online classes are delivered by our course management system CE Link.

Due to the fact asynchronous online classes do not meet live, classes open at 12:00 AM Eastern Time on the first day of class. For example, if your asynchronous class begins on a Monday, your class will become available first thing Monday morning (at midnight).

Although the RISD Store is not physically open for in-person sales, required supplies for your course may be available for purchase, including the option for direct shipment. Visit the RISD Store website for more information.

There are many free scanner apps for your smartphone such as Genius Scan, Scanner Pro and Prizmo. You can also use a digital camera to capture your work. If you are having difficulty with scanning, please follow up with your instructor for guidance.

For this reason, it is extremely important that we have your correct telephone numbers and email addresses. Additionally, in the case of these circumstances, please note that RISD CE is not responsible for supplies purchased prior to the start of classes or other expenses (such as travel or lodging) that may be incurred in advance.
